CDC’s 2nd Annual Diversity Recruiting Training Institute a Success

The University of Cincinnati Career Development Center’s 2nd annual Diversity Recruiting Training Institute held on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the Duke Energy Convention Center was a huge success, based on the positive evaluations submitted by over 100 employers, college and community resource persons and students in attendance.

Participants were welcomed by Career Development Center (CDC) Director Linda Bates Parker, who reviewed the goals of DRTI, which focuses on helping employers strengthen diversity recruiting and their search for talented and diverse students on college campuses.   Dr. Mitchel L. Livingston, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services and Chief Diversity Officer provided official greetings from the university and presented Jody Hestand, Diversity Relations Leader, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Title Sponsor, with the DRTI Diversity Champion Award, for her outstanding support of diversity programs and services at UC.  Diversity Champion Awards were also presented to individuals who have distinguished themselves for their years of continued commitment and leadership in diversity, including:  Miguel Alemany, Director, Research & Development, Procter & Gamble, Karen Bankston, PhD, FACHE, Senior Vice President,  Drake Center, Inc. The Health Alliance; Terry Bankston, Program Coordinator/Instructor, CDC; Carver Johnson, Chief Diversity Officer, Kroger Company; Tommie L. Lewis, Senior Manager, Global Diversity, Convergys Corporation; Vernon Martin, Human Resources Director,  Altria Client Services, Philip Morris USA;  Peter Strange, Chairman & CEO, Messer Construction Company.

Comments on this year’s DRTI included:  “I thought last year’s program was excellent.  This year’s was even better.  Can’t wait ‘til next year!” “The morning speakers were outstanding.”  “The student video and panel really helped me to have a better understanding of what our organization must do to attract this kind of talent.”  “The panel made me more aware of Cincinnati’s need to keep more of these bright college students in our community.” “The afternoon workshops were very informative, especially the handouts and info on Affinity Groups.” “As a representative of a major Cincinnati law firm, I was very pleased to see how rich an experience this was.  I plan to return next year and bring others.  Keep up the good work.”

CDC thanks our Employer Planning Group and our Sponsors, who contributed to the design, implementation and funding of DRTI 2008, including: the African American Chamber of Commerce, Cintas, Convergys, Drake Center, Health Alliance, Duke Energy, Kroger, Messer and Wal-Mart.

Plan now to join us for next year’s DRTI August, 4, 2009.
