UC to Award Four Honorary Doctorates and an Award for Excellence at June Commencement
The Honorary Doctoral Degree, described as the highest award to be received from the University of Cincinnati, recognizes individuals for their ideals and outstanding achievements. The University of Cincinnati Award for Excellence recognizes those who have increased the stature of the institution. Four people will receive honorary doctorates at the University of Cincinnati Spring Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, June 14, in Fifth Third Arena at Shoemaker Center. UC alumnus Milton C. Anderson, founder and director of The Young Americans musical performance company, will be honored with the University of Cincinnatis Award for Excellence.
UCs four honorary doctorates will be awarded to:
Earl Hamner, author and creator of the long-running television series The Waltons and an alumnus of the UC College-Conservatory of Music, will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Performing Arts during the 2 p.m. ceremony. He will also deliver the Commencement address to UC graduates.
Stan Herman, the pioneer of the designer uniform, a graduate of UCs top-ranked College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP), a three-time Coty award-winning designer and past president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), will be awarded the Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts at the 9 a.m. ceremony.
Brigman Brig Owens, a UC alumnus of the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, former NFL star and co-founder of the sports management and real estate development firm, Bennett & Owens, as well as founder of the non-profit youth program, Super Leaders, will be awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the 9 a.m. ceremony.
William Bill Wiesmann, MD, HemCon bandage co-inventor/developer, BioSTAR Group founder and alumnus of the UC McMicken College of Arts & Sciences, will be awarded the Honorary Doctor of Science at the 2 p.m. ceremony.
Milton C. Anderson, founder and director of The Young Americans musical performance company, will be honored with the University of Cincinnatis Award for Excellence during UCs Commencement Ceremony at 9 a.m. Anderson earned his bachelors degree from UC in music education. He founded The Young Americans non-profit educational organization in 1962 to reflect a positive image of the nations youth through music and dance.

UC College-Conservatory of Music Dean Pete Jutras has announced the appointment of Kenneth Renshaw as CCM's new Assistant Professor of Violin. His faculty appointment officially begins on Aug. 15, 2025. Born and raised in San Francisco, Renshaw came to international attention in 2012 after winning First Prize at the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition in Beijing. Todd Almond is no stranger to the stage. A 1999 alum of the UC College-Conservatory of Music with a BFA in Acting and BM in Vocal Performance, he got his start in local Cincinnati productions in the early 2000s. Since then, he’s gone on to a career as a performer in Broadway musicals, a writer of acclaimed plays and a singer/composer on multiple original albums. Now, Almond adds the title of “author” to his multi-hyphenate. CCM congratulates Erin Alcorn (DMA Voice ‘25) for her recent first place win at UC’s GradNEXT Competition, a Shark Tank-style event where UC students pitch their ideas for how the university can reshape graduate education. In addition to her first place win, Alcorn took home the Audience Choice Prize, and will receive funding support for her dissertation project: the UC ARIA Initiative, incorporating virtual reality into art song performance.
