Exchange 2007 Frequently asked questions.
To ask a question, please send an email to Technician@uc.edu
1. Can I assume outlook 2003 will still function with the front ends?
Yes, Exchange 2007 will continue to work with all clients. However, if you are using a POP3 or an IMAP client, when your mailbox is moved to an Exchange 2007 mailbox server, the client must connect to the new front and and it must use secure POP or Secure IMAP.
2. Will there be any increase in the file size which can be sent/received?
Yes. We maintain a file send/recieve limit in order to prevent a message with a very large attachment from filling up one person's inbox. But since we will increase the inbox quotas in mid-Spetember, we will revisit the send/recieve file size and increase it.
3. How do we configure Secure POP and secure IMAP?
Once the mailbox is on an Exchange 2007 server:
Secure POP (POP-SSL):
Username is 6+2 only (domain doesn’t need to be specified, as in AD\adams2jt)
- Username is 6+2 only (domain doesn’t need to be specified, as in AD\adams2jt)
- Password is the user’s PSS/AD password.
- Incoming AND outgoing server are both ucmail.uc.edu
- SPA (Secure Password Authentication) should be enabled (checked)
- Under “More Settings” – “Outgoing Server” tab: “My outgoing server requires authentication” should be checked, along with “Use the same settings as my incoming server”
- Advanced tab: Select “SSL” as the encryption type for incoming server, port should be 995. For outgoing server, the port should be 587, and Encryption type for SMTP (“outbound”) should be Auto (if it’s available), or TLS (if Auto isn’t an option).
- Everything else is optional.
Secure IMAP: All settings are the same as secure POP, except the Incoming Server port is 993 instead of 995. I believe this port number is usually selected automatically when you select "SSL" for the encryption type. Secure Password Authentication should be disabled, or POP/IMAP connections will fail.
4. You stated that the preferred server address is UCMAIL.UC.EDU. Does that mean that UCOWA.UC.EDU is going away?
No, we plan to keep ucmail.uc.edu indefinitely because many people use this address and have it programmed into their smartphones. Because the same address is nw utilized for many different types of access in Exchange 2007, we set up the URL ucmail.uc.edu. All of our documentation in the future will include the ucmail.uc.edu address.
5. What happened to Outlook Mobile Access – we used to get at it at http://ucowa.uc.edu/oma.
Outlook Mobile Access was discontinued in Exchange 2007, since ActiveSync was becoming more and more usable and compatible. Most “Smartphone” type devices are now capable of supporting ActiveSync, either out of the box, or through a software update.
6. I pay for Extended storage. When you increased storage last time, I still stayed at 500 MB. What will happen this time.
When we increase the default mailbox Quotas to 300 MB, We will increase the quotas for those paying for extra storage to 800 MB. Thus your money will buy you an additional 500 MB. With the new architecture, we now have the space to do this. We were not confident we have the space to do this on Exchange 2003.
7. Will the ridiculously short timeouts in OWA be changed?
Maybe. The Exchange 2007 version of OWA lets you make a selection on the login page of a public computer or a private computer. The timeouts for each selection are different. A public computer is for when you are sitting at a computer that is not your. It has a short timeout period to prevent someone else from jumping on to your accountif you leave and forget to log out.
A Private computer is for when you have your own computer. The timeout is longer. But on your own computer, I would suggest considering using Outlook Anywhere. It is a new technology that will allow you to use the full-fledged corporate Outlook client without the VPN. This will be available when your mailbox is moved to an Exchange 2007 server and Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003.
8. Since the cutover to Exchange 2007 I get an error message when I open Outlook. "Unable to establish a connection with the Livelink server."
This is a result of removing the Archival system.
To remove this, Open Outlook, Go to File, Data File Management
In my Outlook 2007 Client I highlighted Livelink and then selected Delete.
9. In OWA I am unable to read signed messages. I follw the link to download the S-Mime Client, but I am unable to.
It’s the IE7 access protection controls. When you’re on the campus network, IE7 recognizes that ucmail.uc.edu is on the “Intranet” and allows it to run ActiveX controls. From outside the campus network, it’s on the “internet,” which means it assigns security rules accordingly; this includes prohibiting some types of ActiveX controls.
If you add https://ucmail.uc.edu to your “Trusted Sites” list, that should fix the problem.
10. The Menu in my smart phone changed.
Yes, the menu options have changed. For example, Manual Sync used to be Option 8 under Exchange 2003. In Exchange 2007 it is option 9.
11. What version of Eudora do you recommend?
We no longer recommend that our users use Eudora. We recommend Outlook 2007, Entourage 2008 and Outlook Web access. These clients are robust, secure and are best able to exploit the many features of Exchange 2007. Outlook 2007 has proven itself to be mroe secure that the Outlook versions of the late 90s and early 2000s. There not not been an incidence of viruses grabbing users address books anymore. You can control what goes on your calendar.
We are finding that older version of Eudora are just not capable of connecting to the new Exchange server. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the technology has advanced and the older software just cannot keep up. Qualcomm no longer provides critical security updates or patches and will not offer ongoing technical assistance for Eudora.
12. I understand with Exchange 2007 I can configure my out of office messages to go to people outside the UC Exchange environment. But I am using Outlook 2003 and cannot find that option.
This option is not available in Outlook 2003. You need to configure it with Outlook 2007 or Using the Outlook Web access. In the Outlook Web access, Click on Options on the Upper Right hand side of the page. On the Options page, Look at the Coulmn on the Left hand side and select Out of Office Assistant.
Select "Send Out of Office Replies" Enter in your reply and set the dates you want the Reply to be sent if desired.
Scroll down.
Select "Send Out of office auto-replies to External Senders" and enter in the desired text.
13. How do I recover Deleted emails?
