CSD3033: Human Displacement and Social Justice: A Costa Rican Perspective

Course Description
This course is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to actively engage in the expansion of his/her cultural humility. The student will be immersed in the culture of Costa Rica to promote a greater understanding of human behavior and the application of critical thinking skills. The experiential learning component provides an opportunity to explore first hand global concepts of human rights, sustainable development, and social justice in order to foster inclusion, civic participation, and global responsibility. At times, students will be asked to step outside their comfort zone. Respect for Costa Rican culture, flexibility, a positive attitude, and tolerance will be required characteristics of students taking the course.
Getting There
We will utilize group flights from Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport to Liberia, Costa Rica. We will spend our time in Cano Negra with day trips to Los Chiles, Bijagua, and Liberia. After our stay in Liberia, we will depart to return to Cincinnati.
Living Arrangements
While staying in Costa Rica the group will be staying in a hotel similar to a 3-star hotel in the US.
Tentative Itinerary
Day 1 - Saturday, December 13: depart Cincinnati, travel, arrive in Liberia, transfer to Cano Negro
Day 2 - Sunday, December 14: community visits and projects
Day 3 - Monday, December 15: visit Miskito Indigenous Refugee Community and participate in a cooking class
Day 4 - Tuesday, December 16: day trip to Los Chiles to visit UNICEF site
Day 5 - Wednesday, December 17: overnight trip to Bijagua to visit public schools and ACNUR
Day 6 - Thursday, December 18: visit Volcan Tenorio National Park, Rio Celeste, and Arbol de la Paz
Day 7 - Friday, December 19: visit La Fortuna hot springs
Day 8 - Saturday, December 20: depart to Cincinnati
