Opportunities for veterans to get involved & support the community.

UC Serves Day

Each year the university celebrates UC Serves, a day for staff and faculty to share the experience of intentional, focused service to the communities surrounding the University of Cincinnati campuses and beyond. The day of service helps connect UC with community neighbors and build stronger connections among university employees. UC Serves brings staff and faculty to the front lines in supporting UC’s institutional commitment to service and community impact in support of our local nonprofit partners.

Green Zone Training

Green Zone training provides education about military culture and the unique challenges veterans may face as they transition from active-duty service to the civilian workforce. This training is led by Daniel Peat, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Lindner College of Business Management Department. Prior to joining the university, Daniel worked in various military and government positions, most recently as a Division Chief for the Defense Technical Information Center. In addition to his work at UC, Daniel serves in the US Army Reserves as an adjunct professor for the Command and General Staff Officer Course.

Mentor Me program

The Mentor Me UC program is an informal staff mentoring program designed to aid in the attraction and retention of talent to the university by encouraging career development, supporting inclusion, and creating a culture of learning.  Mentoring occurs in a relationship that is voluntary and formed by both persons. Informal mentors provide a higher level of particular types of career development functions including coaching, challenging assignments, and increasing the mentee’s exposure and visibility.

UC Volunteer Portal

UC has a Volunteer Portal (volunteer.uc.edu) that serves as a resource for both students and employees to find volunteer opportunities across Cincinnati.  The volunteer opportunities listed in UC’s Volunteer Portal are posted by UC, student organizations, or third-party organizations.

Annual Veterans Day Celebration

The Veterans Day Ceremony is a tradition at the University of Cincinnati. The ceremony hosted by Veterans Programs & Services and the Army and Air Force ROTC components honors UC and community veterans.

Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Run

The University of Cincinnati recognizes the anniversary of the 2001 terror attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., each year with its annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Run at Nippert Stadium.  Organized in 2015 by UC’s Office of Veterans Programs & Services, the event challenges participants to climb 2,071 steps at the stadium representing the steps in the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

The Veteran’s Task Force

UC created a Veteran Task Force in 2019 to increase the recruitment and retention of diverse and highly skilled veteran faculty, staff, and students.  The task force is made up of volunteer members from many different areas of campus and is currently chaired by Karla Phillips, Assistant Director, Equal Opportunity for UC’s Office of Equal Opportunity and Terence Harrison, Manager, Veteran Military Services in Student Affairs.

“Ensuring the campus and culture are welcoming, inclusive, and accessible to student and employee veterans is a vital mission for UC. The task force’s mission is twofold: to make UC a model institution for demonstrating what veterans bring to the classroom and job market and attracting, hiring, and retaining more veteran applicants.”, said Phillips.
