UCNext speaker an expert in brand protection

Interest in business, technology and law led Whitney Gibson to a career in Internet brand protection, filling a major market need

UCNext Series October 27, 2018, with 2.5 CLE pending.

Whitney Gibson (‘04) fell into the legal field almost by accident. But his strong interest in business, technology, and the law has led to a career helping companies protect their brands online. Gibson is just one of the guest speakers at the upcoming UC Law event: UC Next: Converge. Connect. Celebrate. This event will feature some of the country’s  leading thought leaders to discuss the legal and business issues that impact their fields. The TedX-style event will be held 3-8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, at the College of Law in Room 114. Registration is still open, sign up today! UC has requested approval for 2.5 hours of general CLE.

UC Law alumnus Gibson is a partner at the Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP law firm in Cincinnati, OH.

Gibson’s introduction to the legal field was almost by accident. Growing up, Gibson knew he wanted to move into the legal field eventually, and after receiving an undergraduate business degree, he entered UC Law.

Now a full-time lawyer, Gibson has helped over 200 brands with internet brand protection. And he loves it. Gibson explains, “We haven’t been able to stop searching for opportunities to be creative; we are continually developing unique and valuable strategies to stay at the forefront of these issues.”

Online retail is relatively new, and it wasn’t Gibson’s lifetime ambition to work in this sector. However, through a combined interest in business and law and listening to the needs of the marketplace, Gibson found his niche.

This field has required Gibson to sharpen more than just his business and legal skills. The interdisciplinary aspect of internet brand protection has resulted in Gibson utilizing his technological skills, orchestrating online investigations, oftentimes using a considerable amount of creativity.

For the upcoming UCNext event, Gibson plans to share his expertise of the field. His discussion will focus on more than just internet brand protection, but how novel legal strategies can deliver results. These tactics not only help remove unauthorized online retail, but also prevent further activity through identification of the source.
