New career studio helps A&S students hone career-prep skills
UC’s liberal arts students get a new resource for job search support

As students from the University of Cincinnati polish their resumes and suit up for internship and job interview season, there’s a new center available to help out.
The McMicken College of Arts and Sciences announced the opening of a new Career Studio this fall in conjunction with UC’s Division of Experience-Based Learning and Career Education.
“As part of the University’s Next Lives Here strategic direction, and the Bearcat Promise —which states all students will graduate with a degree and a career plan — we think it’s critical that A&S students receive this kind of hands-on career support,” said Lisa Holstrom, the college's senior assistant dean.
“In partnership with UC’s Experience-Based Learning and Career Education Office, we are helping students shape their professional future. In addition to practical skills related to job searches, A&S students are learning to communicate the relevance of their liberal arts education to employers in today’s workplace."
Located in room 211 in 2925 Campus Green Drive on UC’s Uptown Campus, the interactive space provides A&S undergraduate students with peer support in developing job search materials and identifying experiential learning opportunities, such as interships and co-ops.
Career Studio facilitators are trained to assist students with resumes and cover letters, preparation for career fairs and interviews, elevator pitches, networking strategies, digital networks such as LinkedIn and the UC platform Handshake, and the job search process. The studio operates on a drop-in basis, with no appointment necessary, and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition to helping students develop their career prep skills, the studio offers Collegiate Connections, a program through which undergraduates are paired with A&S alumni in their aspirational career fields. This will allow students to have a more personalized experience and allow them to reach specific goals while also improving their professional development and transferrable skills.
Throughout the school year, the Career Studio will hold professional development workshops, events and programs for students. In February, it will host “Meet the Employers,” an opportunity for students to sit down and learn more from business leaders in all industries. The relaxed, expo-style setting welcomes businesses of all types and sizes including start-ups, non-profits, and government agencies to discuss their work, the transferrable skills they look for in candidates, and experiential learning opportunities.
The studio also plans to offer a program called From Here to Career, in which students visit area companies and organizations to gain insight into their career fields of interest.
