Forbes: 'I love telling Black women’s stories’
UC alumna Brande Victorian describes her writer’s journey in print media, where diversity is lacking
In a Forbes magazine feature, UC journalism alumna Brande Victorian tells the journey of finally finding her voice in print media, and how she climbed over the hurdles in an industry widely known for its lack of diversity.
The article dives into the statical unlikelihood of women of color becoming successful in the field, and Victorian’s reflection of her early years in medical publishing lends an example of how difficult it can be to rise through the ranks.
While her early career in medical publishing was fraught with discrimination, Victorian managed to find the strength to quit her full-time position and start over as a freelancer with MadameNoire, where she became a lead editor. While there, she told stories that intentionally celebrated Black women's achievements and illustrated the diversity of the Black female voice and experience. After eight years, she moved to Essence Magazine, where she is currently the senior entertainment editor.
