Celebrate Cicadapocalypse 2021 at Hoxworth Blood Center

The sun is shining, the temperature’s rising and the cicadas are screaming! Celebrate this year’s cicada invasion (or simply escape the hordes of buzzing, red-eyed locusts) by donating blood at Hoxworth Blood Center.

Individuals who donate blood at one of Hoxworth’s seven Neighborhood Donor Centers between Wednesday, May 26 and Thursday, June 3 will receive a limited-edition T-shirt to commemorate their lifesaving donation during the Brood X cicada emergence.

White shirt with red blood drop and black outline of cicada reading "I didn't wait 17 years to come out and donate!"

“Let’s be honest: The Brood X cicada invasion is not something most of us look forward to, and in fact, many of us will try to stay inside as much as possible,” said Alecia Lipton, spokesperson for Hoxworth Blood Center. “But while we might want to just hunker down indoors and drown out the incessant screaming, others in our community are counting on us to donate lifesaving blood and platelet products so they can survive surgeries, transplants, traumas and cancer treatments. We hope this exclusive shirt will be a draw for many of our donors — it won’t be back for another 17 years!”

Lipton notes that the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a difficult time for blood banks across the country, as traumas and emergency surgeries typically skyrocket but vacations interfere with donors’ regular schedules.

Appointments are encouraged due to the anticipated popularity of this exclusive giveaway. To schedule a donation, visit www.hoxworth.org or call 513-451-0910.
