CCM presents Dance Works performances Dec. 2-5
CCMONSTAGE Dance presents a mixed repertoire performance featuring the world premiere of a new work
UC's College-Conservatory of Music presents Dance Works on Thursday, Dec. 2, through Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021, in Patricia Corbett Theater. Featuring choreography by CCM faculty members and guest artist Jennie Creer-King, the performance features the world premiere of a new work for orchestra and dance by Alexander Zemlinsky Prize for Composition winner, Aya Yoshida.
The mixed-reperoitre dance concert opens with Paquita, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa to music by Ludwig Minkus and restaged by CCM Dance Professor Deirdre Carberry. The program then features "Twilight Tango," choreographed by CCM Dance Professor Thomas Bell and set to "La Punalada" from Tango Argentino, Melodia in A Minor for Violin and Piano by Astor Piazzolla, Thorn-Torn Lips by Hanna Shybayeva and Milongita Finlandesa by Cayao.
CCM Dance Department Chair Shauna Steele choreographs "Falling Upwards," which is set to the world premiere of Let Me Take You There by Alexander Zemlinsky Prize for Composition Aya Yoshida — an award-winning guest composer. CCM's Composition program hosts the international competition, awarding $60,000 in cash prizes to the top three finalists and giving the first prize winner the opportunity to premiere an original work at CCM. Yoshida's music is premiered by CCM Dance and the CCM Philharmonia, with music direction by CCM Director of Orchestral Studies Mark Gibson and led by student conductor Xiao Geng. Learn more about the Alexander Zemlinsky Prize for Composition.
The program culminates with "From the Beginning," choreographed by guest artist Jennie Creer-King and set to W.A. Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor, K. 478: III. Rondo (Allegro). Creer-King is an award-winning dancer, instructor and choreographer. Among her awards include “Best School Award” by the Youth American Grand Prix, “Best of State” in Choreography and Youth Performing Group, and the Presidential Scholar’s Teacher Recognition Award.
The 2021-22 CCMONSTAGE Dance Series presents Dance Works Dec. 2-5, 2021, at Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office; student discounts are available.
