CCM Wind Studies' spring 2022 concerts showcase pops hits, faculty artists and high school guests
Watch the Wind Symphony and guests perform in four concerts this semester; tickets on sale now
The CCM Wind Symphony, led by Director of Wind Studies and Division Head of Ensembles and Conducting Kevin Michael Holzman, presents four ticketed performances during the spring 2022 semester — beginning with a program of pops favorites by John Williams, John Phillip Sousa, Gustav Holst and more on Feb. 18.
The first concert, titled "Summon the Heroes," welcomes conductor emeritus Terence Milligan to the podium to lead Holst's First Suite in E-flat. The performance also features faculty artist Michael Mergen, trumpet, on a four-part John Williams Suite featuring "Summon the Heroes" from the 1996 Summer Olympics, "Harry's Wondrous World" from the Harry Potter movie franchise, "Superman March" from the iconic Superman: The Movie (1978) and "With Malice Toward None" from Lincoln (2012).
The next concert in the Wind Symphony's season is "Come Sunday" on March 25. Featuring student musicians from Lakota West High School, the performance showcases a newly commissioned work by Augusta Read Thomas, Holst's Hammersmith, Joel Puckett’s stunning That Secret from the River and Omar Thomas’ thrilling Come Sunday.
CCM Wind Studies showcases its stars-of-tomorrow in the annual PRISM performance on March 27. This one-hour spectacular gives audiences a potpourri glimpse into CCM’s Wind Studies department, including performances by the Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Winds, Brass Choir, Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble, UC Bearcat Band and more. A thrilling experience, PRISM is an excellent opportunity to introduce older children to the concert hall.
To close its season, the Wind Symphony presents Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition on April 22. This concert also features Julia Wolfe's ZigZag, Ives’ The Alcotts, Persichetti’s Psalm for Band and Simon's Amen!. The Walnut Hills High School Wind Ensemble will join the Wind Symphony for this performance under the baton of Richard Canter.
