Lifeguard training available at UC

Free class available for those who want to work for Campus Recreation

Registration is now open for the free lifeguarding classes at Campus Recreation. 

The American Red Cross lifeguard training classes are being offered in two sessions. Each session takes place over a period of two weekends. Participants must attend all class dates in one session to become certified. Upon successful completion for the course, participants will receive a American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification that is valid for two years.

Participants must be at least 16 years old by the last day of class. The class is free for individuals who want to work at CRC over the summer.

To register, email Autumn Cleverley to sign up for a pre-skills assessment on March 28 for Course One, or April 18 for Course 2. Appointment times will be scheduled throughout each day. Free lifeguard training classes are for individuals who want to work an average of 15 hours per week at Campus Recreation for the entire 2022 summer season.

Course two (2) of free lifeguard training class for individuals who want to work an average of 15 hours at Campus Recreation for the entire 2022 summer season

Skills test includes the ability to: 

  • Swim 300 yards, non-stop, using a combination of freestyle and breaststroke.
  • Tread water for two minutes without using hands.
  • Swim 20 yards to retrieve a 10 pound brick from water 13 ft, 6 in section of the pool.  While swimming on your back and holding the brick with both hands, return to where you started and climb out of the pool in 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Most students tend to sway towards the most popular option of faculty-led programs, because of its shorter duration and high level of faculty support. But some UC students strike out on their own, choosing to fly solo for a semester to a year with long-term study abroad programs.
