Healthline: Why self-esteem matters

The University of Cincinnati's Shana Feibel, DO, was featured in a Healthline article on the importance of self-esteem and how to build up your own self-esteem.

Feibel, assistant professor of clinical psychiatry & behavioral neuroscience in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a psychiatrist at the Lindner Center of Hope in Mason, said self-esteem is simply how you feel about yourself, or an enduring perception of your qualities, abilities and characteristics.

People often link high self-esteem with narcissism, but Feibel said there is more to narcissitic personality disorder than just high self-esteem.

“Narcissistic people tend to feel hollow and empty inside, while people with high self-esteem do not feel empty and value themselves,” Feibel said.
