In a story for Reuters Health published by Medscape, it was reported that Type 2 diabetes subtypes have partially distinct genetic backgrounds, suggesting etiological differences that may one day be targeted for treatment. That was the conclusion of genome-wide association analyses. Women who receive a kidney transplant have low rates of contraceptive use according to new research from the University of Cincinnati. The study, published in the Journal of Nephrology, finds an overall contraceptive use rate of 9.5% among women with kidney transplants in the United States.

The University of Cincinnati is joining a nationwide study to evaluate repurposed medications in the search for effective, safe treatments for mild-to-moderate COVID-19. Repurposed medications are those already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for other indications. ACTIV-6, “The Randomized Trial to Evaluate Efficacy of Repurposed Medications,” is a nationwide double-blind study expected to enroll nearly 15,000 participants from across the United States through its website.

Health experts in the United States are monitoring an increase in cases of bird flu in several states, including Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia. In January, the United States Department of Agriculture detected the first U.S. bird flu case after a hunted wild bird tested positive for the virus in Colleton County, South Carolina. Experts reported that it was the H5N1 strain, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) — the same strain responsible for fatal poultry outbreaks across Europe and Asia in late 2021. Research from UC is examining a protein that plays a key role in heart failure. The study is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for just over $2 million dollars for four years and is a second renewal of a previous grant given to Sakthivel Sadayappan, PhD, professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Health and Disease in the Department of Internal Medicine at the UC College of Medicine.
