Biosensor detects toxins in water sources

August 5, 2020

University of Cincinnati environmental engineers and chemists developed a biosensor to detect toxins in surface water such as streams, rivers and lakes. Funded through National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, the research was recently featured in an NSF video. The research is led by Dionysios Dionysiou, professor of environmental engineering, and addresses the importance of detecting toxic products of cyanobacteria algal blooms, which are formed mainly by agricultural runoff.

University of Cincinnati commits $12M to advance ‘Next’ inclusive culture

The University of Cincinnati is committing $12 million to grow inclusive excellence by leveraging diverse perspectives to advance innovation, creativity and complex problem solving in biomedical research. The new program, FIRST+ Lives Here for Urban Health, aligns with the National Institutes of Health’s FIRST (Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation) Program and advances the university’s Next Lives Here strategic direction.

Caribou have been using the same Arctic calving grounds for more than 3,000 years, according to a new study by the University of Cincinnati. Female caribou shed their antlers within days of giving birth, leaving behind a record of their annual travels across Alaska and Canada’s Yukon that persists on the cold tundra for hundreds or even thousands of years.

Small actions can have a big effect on sustainability

Small actions people take in their own backyards and communities can have a big effect on promoting conservation and biodiversity while revealing an array of animals that live alongside humans. The University of Cincinnati’s Office of Research hosted a panel discussion in the Digital Futures Flashpoint Series, “Wild Cincinnati: Urban Wildlife in the Queen City,” which highlighted some of the species that call the Cincinnati region home and how residents can promote conservation.
