CCTST KL2 Program Receives Five More Years of Funding

The Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training (CCTST) has received its third round of funding through the National Institute of Health (NIH) National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences’ Clinical and Translational Award (CTSA) program. This $22.1 million award will enable the CCTST to continue supporting investigators in maximizing the impact of clinical and translational research to improve individual and population health in Greater Cincinnati and beyond.

UC COVID-19 research examines the safety and efficacy of immune regulating drug

July 15, 2020

Researchers at UC are testing a commonly used drug, called sirolimus, to determine its safety and efficacy in treating hospitalized patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in the trial. The research trial, called Sirolimus Treatment in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19 Pneumonia (SCOPE), will examine the Food and Drug Administration-approved medication that is most commonly used to prevent organ rejection in patients with kidney transplants. It is also FDA-approved for the treatment of a rare lung disease, LAM.

UC, UC Health establish biorepository to collect samples from COVID-19 patients

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is collecting specimens from COVID-19 patients to be stored in a biorepository as part of the Cincinnati COVID-19 Repository (CCR) effort. The specimens will be used by researchers to learn more about the COVID-19 infection and possible treatments and preventions for not only this disease but possibly diseases of the future.

UC, UC Health to launch Phase 3 clinical trial for COVID-19 vaccine

June 17, 2020

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and UC Health will host a Phase 3 clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a vaccine for COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. UC is one of approximately 90 sites across the United States selected for the study, which will administer the vaccine candidate mRNA-1273 to volunteer participants and monitor its efficacy in eliciting an immune response that provides protection from COVID-19.

Cincinnati.com: Study involving UC could help ID genetic markers for opioid addiction

In one of the first studies of its kind, a University of Cincinnati researcher is using a grant from the Ohio attorney general’s office to research the pharmacogenomics of opioid addiction. The grant was awarded to Caroline Freiermuth, MD, associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UC College of Medicine, the principal investigator for the study. The initial year will be supported with $1.63 million from the attorney general’s office, secured through money collected from pharmaceutical companies involved in opioid lawsuits.

Research shows UC screening program contributes to increase in HIV diagnoses

June 30, 2021

Newly published research shows that a screening program in the University of Cincinnati Medical Center Emergency Department helped detect an outbreak of HIV among persons who inject drugs in Hamilton County, Ohio, from 2014-18. The study was published in PLOS One in May 2021. The researchers would like to see this study have an impact on public health policy as well as the frequency of HIV screening in emergency departments across the country.
