UC's service-learning co-op program has received a "Do Good Grant" from The Joe Burrow Foundation. The funding will provide stipends to UC students pursuing degrees in social work for their meaningful, service-oriented work in the mental health field.

Gloria Samuel entered the construction industry more than 20 years ago as a University of Cincinnati co-op student and never looked back. Since then, she has earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees at UC and has taken great pride in giving back to the college by sharing her education and experiences with others as an adjunct faculty and serving on numerous community boards and committees. Currently, she is the Senior Vice President and Director of Construction Program and Project Management for Fifth Third Bank.

Dionysios (Dion) Dionysiou, PhD, professor of environmental engineering in the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, died unexpectedly Nov. 20. He was 57 years old. He was a world-renowned researcher, who was frequently lauded for his work developing technologies and strategies to identify, monitor, and treat water pollutants and toxins.

The estate of Hugh Hoffman, MBA ’63, has established a new scholarship program at three University of Cincinnati colleges. A $56 million gift will create the Hoffman Honors Scholars Program and support student-athletes with an extraordinary endowment.

In its tenth consecutive year participating in the international #GivingTuesday campaign, UC is highlighting some of the compelling work that positively influences the lives of our UC community members and others around the world.

As an aspiring power engineer, University of Cincinnati student Matt Smeal hopes to contribute to a more sustainable world by working towards better energy solutions. Smeal is a fifth-year electrical engineering student at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) specializing in electric energy systems with a minor in environmental studies. Currently, he serves as vice president for Clean Up Cincy, a volunteer litter clean-up organization, and is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Theta Tau engineering fraternity. He is also one of the first students to enroll in CEAS’s new Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy, through the ACCEND program. ACCEND enables undergraduate students to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees concurrently.
