The University of Cincinnati is serving up a new program offering as school begins Sept. 22 a Culinary Arts and Science Program in UC s College of Applied Science. Offered jointly by UC and by Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, the program is the first of its kind in Ohio and one of the few in the nation that blends the art and the science of food preparation to prepare students for careers in food service, packaging, development and research.

Women didn't skirt the tough challenges of co-op. According to Mary Blood who entered the program in 1921, she and her fellow "co-eps" packed Crisco during early mornings at a Procter & Gamble factory. They also hauled lumber and became handy with crowbars too.

Co-ops graduated a little early that wartime spring of 1942 -- on April 10 to be exact. Recalled Florence Schroeder: The boys wore their ROTC uniforms under their caps and gowns and left immediately for the service from commencement. By April 20, I was on the job not as a secretary but as a statistical accountant. The employers hired us for men s positions. They even gave us girls golf lessons.
