University of Cincinnati engineering student Brian Swanson wanted to stay close to home when he began pursuing his doctoral degree. With Bearcat alumni in his family and the university's renowned College of Engineering and Applied Science, UC was the right choice. Swanson is a member of the Intelligent Sensing and Controls Laboratory, a teaching assistant within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and was recently named Graduate Student of the Month by the College.

As an aspiring power engineer, University of Cincinnati student Matt Smeal hopes to contribute to a more sustainable world by working towards better energy solutions. Smeal is a fifth-year electrical engineering student at the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) specializing in electric energy systems with a minor in environmental studies. Currently, he serves as vice president for Clean Up Cincy, a volunteer litter clean-up organization, and is a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Theta Tau engineering fraternity. He is also one of the first students to enroll in CEAS’s new Master of Engineering in Sustainable Energy, through the ACCEND program. ACCEND enables undergraduate students to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees concurrently.

Ground transportation has a substantial impact on the daily lives of humans. Sai Bonthu, a doctoral candidate of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Cincinnati, is working to develop a product that has the potential to accurately reduce traffic accidents. Currently, he is working on a grant with the Ohio Department of Transportation and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Vamshi Kiran Gogi always wanted to be an engineer. During the first semester of his master's program at the University of Cincinnati, he developed a passion for semiconductor research, leading him to transition into a PhD program. Throughout his years as a Bearcat, Gogi has served as the president of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Graduate Student Association, trained students in cleanroom processes, acted as a graduate assistant in the Office of College Computing and more. He was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science.
