Local music spotlight: On a Limb releases new album

UC College-Conservatory of Music alumni pianist Andrew Haug (BM Jazz Studies, ‘18), bassist Noah Simionides (BM Jazz Studies, ‘17) and drummer Charlie Schefft (BM Music Education, ‘19) teamed up four years ago to create On a Limb, a jazz-influenced instrumental trio. The ensemble has experienced significant successes, including tour dates around the United States and now the release of its second album, Replaying the Tapes.

Violin alum Christopher Robinson receives 2021 Knights Arts Champion Award

UC College-Conservatory of Music Alumnus Christopher Robinson (BM Violin, ‘15) was recently announced as a 2021 Knights Arts Champion by the Knight Foundation in Miami, Florida. The Foundation selects community leaders who have contributed to the region’s arts and culture scene and awards them $10,000 to direct to a South Florida artist or arts organization of their choice. Robinson is the Founder/Co-Artistic Director of VIA Academy, a free summer music program for young aspiring musicians from remote and underrepresented communities in classical music. He is also a recent alumnus of the New World Symphony in Miami and currently performs in the second violin section of the Louisville Orchestra.

CCM alumni compete in Lotte Lenya Competition Finals

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music is delighted to announce that two of its alumni reached the finals of the Lotte Lenya Competition, one of the most prestigious vocal competitions for young artists. Victoria Okafor (MM Voice, ’21) and Max Chernin (BFA Musical Theatre, ‘12) were chosen to compete in a final round of 15 vocalists out of a record applicant pool of over 500.

Commercial Music Production alum performs with Gladys Knight

Bryard Huggins (BM Commercial Music Production, ‘17) recently accompanied iconic soul singer Gladys Knight for a concert in Florida. Huggins was featured as an up-and-coming artist and performed alongside Knight in a cover of Barbara Streisand’s “The Way We Were,” followed by a solo rendition of Richard Smallwood’s “Total Praise.” Knight has a history of helping launch the careers of pop crooners like Alicia Keys and Michael Bublé through these side-by-side appearances. On April 25, Huggins will collaborate onstage with Knight once more for a concert at the Ryman Auditorium in his hometown.

CCM names Nick Photinos as new Eminent Scholar in Chamber Music

UC College-Conservatory of Music Interim Dean Jonathan Kregor has announced the addition of Nick Photinos to the college’s roster of distinguished performing and media arts faculty members. A four-time Grammy Award-winning cellist, Photinos begins his new role as CCM’s Professor of Chamber Music and Eminent Scholar on Aug. 15, 2023.

CCM alumna Teresa Perrotta wins Met Opera Laffont Competition

CCM proudly celebrates Teresa Perrotta (MM Vocal Performance, ’19 and AD Opera Performance, ’21) and Chuanyuan Liu (AD Opera Performance, ’23), who have advanced through the district and regional levels of the prestigious Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition to reach the semifinal round, held on the Met stage in New York April 17.

Ian Axness named Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Resident Music Director at CCM

UC College-Conservatory of Music Interim Dean Jonathan Kregor has announced the addition of Ian Axness to the college’s roster of distinguished performing and media arts faculty members. A versatile conductor, collaborative pianist and teaching artist, Axness first joined CCM’s faculty as an adjunct and guest resident music director in 2022. His new appointment as Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre and Resident Music Director will begin on Aug. 15, 2023.

CCM alum Evan Gidley named executive director of Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra

One of Cincinnati’s most popular performing ensembles is welcoming new leadership this summer, and there’s a CCM connection: alumnus Evan Gidley (MM Saxophone Performance, ‘18) was recently named executive director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. An independent ensemble of 32 professional musicians, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra (CCO) launched the critically acclaimed “Summermusik” festival in August 2015.
