The University of Cincinnati’s Venture Lab is a mentor-based entrepreneurial support ecosystem designed to provide guidance, support and structure to help early-stage startups move from idea to prototype stage. The goal of a pre-accelerator is to provide intensive guidance, mentorship and resources for budding entrepreneurs so they can establish a strong foundation for growth and attract customers and investors.

In a recent CB Insights report on why startups fail, not having the right team is near the top of the list. Startups need to build a team that is vision and mission supportive from adding external freelance talent or contractors, to advisory board members, to bringing partners and talent on board.

According to national studies, as many as 75% to 85% of undergraduate students will change their major at least once before earning their degree. One in ten undergraduate students will change their major more than once throughout their college career. With over 40 majors to choose from in the University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts and Sciences, declaring a major can be a comprehensive process. Fourth year undergraduate student Maggie Sweeney found her perfect fit in the International Affairs program. “I used my resources at UC and looked into a couple different majors,” said Sweeney. “International affairs stuck out to me because it is an interdisciplinary major and all my interests in history, language, and social justice were encompassed into one major as a whole.”

Now in its second year, the CPS All-Star Showcase raised $15,000 to assist students in need at CPS schools. The basketball competition, between CPS schools all-stars and other competitions, is a partnership between CPS and UC that raises funds for Project Connect, an organization of advocacy paired with specialized educational services and lifestyle enrichment opportunities for CPS students experiencing homelessness.
