The study shows that COVID-19 cases and quarantines are lower in school districts with mask mandates.

The UPI posted a story about research led by Katie Phillips, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at the UC College of Medicine on coping mechanisms for people who have had a diminished or lost sense of smell from COVID-19. Two of the common adaptations among patients she saw at her clinic were incorporating texture and temperature into their food and drink.

Spray on skin, called RECELL, is now approved for both adults and children, sparing them the unnecessary pain of dozens of skin grafts. UC Health says it’s the first in the region to use the technology made by Avita. WVXU published a story on the spray, quoting Julia Slater, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the UC College of Medicine.

UC researchers are taking part in a new nearly $2 million, multiyear study that will help develop a new generation of PPE, or personal protective equipment, for health care workers. UC researchers will work with teams from Iowa State University and the University of California-Davis to improve the design, function and safety of PPE, or personal protective equipment, the university said in a release this week. The study is part of a multi-institutional, four-year grant worth $1.8 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Cincinnati Business Courier published a story on the research.

With people wearing masks over the past 18 months or so to ward off COVID-19, the incidence of the common cold has been reduced during that time. However, as more people get vaccines and boosters, and mask mandates are eased in some instances, the common cold could be poised to make a comeback as we head into the fall and winter months. Giddy posted a primer on what causes the common cold and how to combat it and one of the expert sources they cited was Carl Fichtenbaum, MD, of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UC College of Medicine.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution published a story on research at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine possibly adding a weapon to hospitals’ bacteria fighting arsenal.Using the topical drug called AB569 — a combination of acidified nitrite and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid — promotes killing of antibiotic-resistant bacteria while enhancing the healing of wounds in a variety of burn injuries, the study found. The study was published in the journal Infection and Immunity.

The anti-depressant drug fluvoxamine is being looked at by researchers as a possible treatment for COVID-19. A recently released study showed the drug showed a reduced risk of hospitalization and death among COVID patients. Carl Fichtenbaum, MD, of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UC College of Medicine was interviewed for a Health.com story on the study results.

New research on the forcible separation of families at the U.S.-Mexico border, shows that many parents and children showed long-term, serious mental health disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression. In a story on the study, the Dallas Morning News interviewed several expert sources, including Maria Espinola, PsyD, assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the UC College of Medicine.
