In 2015, pianist Brianna Matzke (MM Piano Performance, '11; DMA Piano Performance, '14) decided to look beyond traditional classical music outlets and create a project where new musical works could take shape. True to its name, the Cincinnati-based Response Project encourages composers and other artists to make compositions that react to other art, including music.

UC student Lawrence Sapp, who is expected to compete in the August 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo — having claimed a silver medal at the 2019 World Games in London and a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2017 World Para Swimming Championships in Mexico City — is fast becoming a campus celebrity.

Karthikeyan Sakthivel, a senior medical sciences undergraduate at the University of Cincinnati, has adopted Coy Field in an attempt to keep the green space clean and ready for use by UC students, area high schoolers and the community. Sakthivel is planning another cleanup event for Coy Field, which is adjacent to the university campus.

Tory McKenna, faculty in the UC College of Allied Health Sciences worked with a team including some speech language pathology students to create a series of educational videos to offer strategies for people to employ to improve their communication while wearing a mask.

Megan Naber hopes to put her engineering degree to good use by finding new ways to reduce the environmental problems that arise from the agriculture industry. Naber, an environmental engineering student at the University of Cincinnati, is motivated by her passion for the natural world and her experiences as an undergraduate researcher. Naber is simultaneously working on two degrees as part of the UC College of Engineering and Applied Science ACCEND accelerated degree program.

Yu Zhang, who first came to the University of Cincinnati in 2014 to begin a master’s degree in environmental engineering., is continuing her research work in developing biofuels from waste as a doctoral student in chemical engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. She shares her research goals, UC experience and the impact she hopes to make through engineering.

By Rebecca Schweitzer [COPY] A new student environmental club has formed during the last year of isolation. Restore Our Mother Earth (R.O.M.E.) was founded during 2020 by students hoping to create a new kind of environmental advocacy group, one focused on legislation. Megan Porter, a fourth-year pre-law student, and Alec Mack, a third-year neurobiology student saw the confinement of the past year as an opportunity to build a new community for students. The idea for the club sprouted following the politicized events of the summer such as Black Lives Matter. The organization, advised by biology professor Dr. Brian Kinkle, approaches environmental issues in a unique fashion, a legal standpoint.
