Research reveals insights into transplant rejection, new drug targets

Imagine a day when a urine test could inform a doctor precisely why a kidney transplant patient was experiencing organ rejection and suggest the best medication for specifically addressing the problem. That day took a leap closer to reality thanks to a set of single-cell analyses that have identified the most specific cellular signatures to date for kidney transplant rejection. The findings were published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

CEAS Expo showcases engineering capstone projects

The second annual College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Expo featured the capstone projects of senior engineering students from the University of Cincinnati. College faculty, staff, students, alumni and industry professionals attended the event organized by CEAS Tribunal, the college student government group, and held at the Duke Energy Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati.

Alumnus makes gift to University of Cincinnati LGBTQ Center

A University of Cincinnati alumnus has made a $200,000 gift to the university’s LGBTQ Center. Bruce Besanko, A&S ’82, retired Kohl’s chief financial officer, has created the Bruce Besanko Support Fund for the LGBTQ Center. The UC LGBTQ Center enhances the campus community for LGBTQ students and their allies through intentional advocacy, providing a safe space, intersectional programming, and access to culturally relevant resources. The Center has been on campus since 2011. Besanko says he wants to directly impact students who use the center as a resource. His gift will support both operational and direct student support.

Aerospace engineer works to improve helicopter turbulence at sea

Syed Qasim Zaheer is a doctoral candidate at the University of Cincinnati studying aerospace engineering, with a specialized interest in fluid dynamics and flow turbulence. His doctoral work has primarily focused on the analysis of air wakes from large ships during sea-based operations, and how to work towards preventing air wakes from causing turbulence to helicopters that land and take off from the ships. Zaheer is a recipient of the Professor R.T. Davis Memorial Scholarship, and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.
