UC cardiologist investigates why the ‘gold standard’ treatment doesn't work well for some

June 3, 2020

Donald Lynch, MD, will conduct an observational study of 150 heart valve replacement patients at UC Medical Center and the University of Kentucky. These patients will undergo TAVR, a procedure in which a catheter-mounted valve is inserted through a small incision in the groin and is minimally invasive compared to open heart surgery. Patients who consent to participate in the study will have blood drawn before the procedure begins, prior to discharge and during clinic follow-ups to determine what biomarkers are predictive of short- and long-term clinical outcomes.

MSN: Hepatitis C-positive livers safe for transplantation

MSN reported on a study from the University of Cincinnati and UC Health showing that patients who received a transplanted liver infected with hepatitis C and were later treated for the infection performed as well in recovery as transplant patients who received an organ free of infection. The study was published in the journal Liver Transplantation. Lead authors, Shimul Shah, MD, Shimul Shah, MD, professor of surgery in the UC College of Medicine, the James and Catherine Orr Endowed Chair of Liver Transplantation, section chief of transplantation at UC Health, and Nadeem Anwar, MD, professor in UC Department of Internal Medicine and UC Health physician, were quoted in the story.

UC study finds HCV-positive livers safe for transplantation; hepatitis C can be cured afterward

As part of the clinical trial at the University of Cincinnati, 32 patients received HCV-positive livers while a control group of 32 patients received non infected livers for transplantation between June 2018 and October 2019. No HCV treatment failures were reported and there were no differences in 30-day and one-year graft (or organ) and patient survival, length of hospital stay, complications or blood infections between the two groups.

Gout treatment may aid patients with congenital heart disease

Jack Rubinstein, MD, associate professor in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and UC Health cardiologist, conducted a randomized double-blind trial which included eight participants who had palliative surgery to correct a condition of the heart known as congenital univentricular circulation. Each participant received probenecid or a placebo during a 12-week period.
