Despite social distancing, UC Medical students celebrate a Match

Social media has sometimes been seen as the culprit of social isolation. But in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s allowing medical students at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine to stay connected as they celebrate Match Day with friends and loved ones, albeit with proper social distancing.

Two UC med students, Tommy Daley and Cassandra Schoborg, have launched the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky COVID-19 match. It is a free service aimed at connecting younger healthy volunteers who have a lower risk for illness with individuals at severe risk of developing coronavirus and in need of someone to pick up groceries, medications or deliver meals.

Maura Kopchak was one of 22 medical students at UC placed at 21 sites across the Tristate as part of the Urban Health Project. Some of her colleagues also worked with troubled youth, assisted blind or visually impaired individuals or aided immigrants in the region. Two medical students, Maddy VandenBrink and Eunice Agyapong, served as co-directors of the Urban Health Project. The organization will host a virtual presentation, 2020 Committed to Community on Tuesday, July 28, starting at 5:30 p.m. Robert Neel, MD, associate professor of neurology and director of the Neurology Residency Program in the UC College of Medicine, will offer a keynote address. Neel is also director of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Clinic at UC Health.
