UC joins national study on COVID-19 community impact

UC is joining a nationwide study to examine the impact of COVID-19 on communities across the United States. The Community Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Study (COMPASS) is part of the efforts by the COVID-19 Prevention Network launched by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Northern Kentucky businessman Carl Fox is taking part in UC's Trailblazer study and is telling his story to WCPO-TV, Channel 9. The TRAILBLAZER study aims to change the parts of a patient’s white blood cells that HIV latches onto, and is led by Dr. Carl Fichtenbaum, a professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Louito Edje, MD, associate dean of medical education at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and UC Medical Center, speaks with CNBC about her participation in a Phase 3 clinical trial for SARS-CoV-2 vaccine after three of her relatives died from the coronavirus. UC is one of approximately 90 sites in the country to host a trial for the mRNA-1273 vaccine developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases scientists and collaborators at biotechnology company Moderna.

A decades old epidemic inspires UC doctoral student’s journey into science

Matthew de Gannes is one of 38 students in the College of Medicine who will earn degrees during the virtual 2020 fall commencement ceremonies set for Dec. 11 and 12. The college will grant 14 doctoral, 23 master’s and one bachelor’s degree. UC is awarding a total of 2,457 degrees to 2,348 students during fall commencement. Some UC programs allow students to earn dual degrees.
