Immediately following the announcement of COVID-19 prevention measures in March, the Greater Cincinnati Tristate region saw a nearly 40% decline in patients coming to the hospital in time for emergency stroke care, according to researchers from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. A University of Cincinnati researcher is advising against using a widely available sterilization method to clean disposable surgical masks and N95 respirators for reuse in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Scarcity of personal protection equipment in medical settings has led many health systems to consider sterilizing and reusing masks developed initially as disposable items, says Sergey Grinshpun, PhD, director of the University of Cincinnati Center for Health-Related Aerosol Studies and professor in the UC Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences.

In one of the first studies of its kind, a University of Cincinnati researcher is using a grant from the Ohio attorney general’s office to research the pharmacogenomics of opioid addiction. The grant was awarded to Caroline Freiermuth, MD, associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UC College of Medicine, the principal investigator for the study. The initial year will be supported with $1.63 million from the attorney general’s office, secured through money collected from pharmaceutical companies involved in opioid lawsuits. Pharmacogenomics, a relatively new field, is the study of how genes affect a person's response to drugs.

WVXU reports on a University of Cincinnati study showing cancer patients undergoing a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy one to three months before a COVID-19 diagnosis have a greater risk of death than patients who haven't undergone cancer treatment in the past year.

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and UC Health will host a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT04511650) to examine the effects of a drug that targets blood vessel inflammation and injury in patients with COVID-19. They will study the effects of razuprotafib, an investigational drug that activates a key pathway for stabilizing blood vessels in the lung and other organs in patients with moderate to severe cases of the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The drug may prevent and treat respiratory distress in COVID-19 patients. The Phase 2 clinical trial will assess safety, tolerability and efficacy of razuprotafib.
