UC Law Team Tops In Regional Arbitration Competition

For the second consecutive year, a team from the UC College of Law has earned the Midwestern Regional championship in a mediation competition sponsored by the American Bar Association. The team of Tracy Fowkes and Bryan Hawkins beat out nine other teams to earn the title and now will represent the Midwest at the ABA's national competition in New York in April, where last year's UC team also came away victorious.

Former Justice Department Official To Talk About Civil Liberties In War On Terror

John Yoo from Cal-Berkeley will present "Beyond the Patriot Act: Civil Liberties and the War on Terrorism" at the UC College of Law on March 18. The public can attend the lecture in person or watch a live Webcast. Besides his academic position, Yoo is a former Justice Department official who looked at issues involving foreign affairs, national security, and the separation of powers, and he's the author of the forthcoming "War, Peace, and the Constitution."

UC Law To Host Inaugural Symposium On Women's Work

The joint degree program in Law and Women's Studies at UC will sponsor its first-ever symposium on April 8 on the balance women maintain between work and family responsibilities. "Woman's Work Is Never Done: Employment, Family and Activism" will feature UC experts and guests from American University, the University of Florida and the University of Iowa discussing what happens legally when a woman's other roles in society create conflicts with the demands of her employer. The event is free and open to the public and can be viewed through a UC Webcast.

Iraqi Prison Abuse Scandal Subject Of Faculty Panel

On May 27, expert faculty from across the UC community will come together for the program, "U.S. Military Detainees: Issues of Law, Ethics and Politics." Three faculty will make presentations, and a question-and-answer period with the public will follow.
