WLWT: More than 300 area school children participate in Girls in STEM Day at UC

Area companies partner with university programs to spark STEM interest

UC partnered with area companies and organizations to create an interactive, hands-on day on May 5 in Tangeman University Center and Teacher Dyer Complex that encouraged 340 middle-school aged girls from across Cincinnati to engage in activities that promote science, technology, engineering and math.

Employees from Procter & Gamble, Turner Construction, Pilot Chemical, the Cincinnati Museum, General Electric and the Cincinnati Public Library were among the partner companies and organizations staffing STEM workshops during the event.

Topics varied with professionals teaching participants to make soap, use biodegradable materials to create water bottles and build Ethernet cables for use. One popular workshop used sand as a substrate to visualize sound as it passes through a solid medium. The vibrational waves interact with a solid surface making the sand dance and create beautiful patterns.

WLWT featured the event in a news segment.

The Girls in STEM Day event at UC coincided and was part of the In-Demand Jobs Week initiative from the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation in Ohio. Many events across Ohio highlighted the state’s top jobs associated with career tech center educations and called attention to the different paths Ohioans can take for a successful career.

The event was organized by the Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative.
