Aerospace engineer works to improve helicopter turbulence at sea

Syed Qasim Zaheer is a doctoral candidate at the University of Cincinnati studying aerospace engineering, with a specialized interest in fluid dynamics and flow turbulence. His doctoral work has primarily focused on the analysis of air wakes from large ships during sea-based operations, and how to work towards preventing air wakes from causing turbulence to helicopters that land and take off from the ships. Zaheer is a recipient of the Professor R.T. Davis Memorial Scholarship, and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Particle image velocimetry, the focus of his research, provides important data to aerospace engineers. Engineering graduate student works to change the future of aviation

Jorge Betancourt, an aerospace engineering doctoral student at the University of Cincinnati, is researching rotating detonation combustors that are slated to impact the future of aviation and rocketry. Thus far during his time at UC, Betancourt has had the opportunity to create assignments that challenge and help students understand material as a teaching assistant and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

UC student aims to develop and educate others on space exploration systems

Through his research in aerospace engineering, University of Cincinnati doctoral candidate Anirudh Chhabra aims to develop systems that can help us better explore and understand space. He also aims to fulfill his passion for teaching by pursuing a career in academia post-graduation, teaching others about space exploration and technology. Chhabra’s research as part of the Intelligent Autonomous Systems Research Laboratory (IASRL) has been federally funded, and he was named the Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Highly decorated UC engineering student presents at global conference

University of Cincinnati student Rebecca Gilligan found a passion for engineering as a teenager at a local high school. After earning her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, she is staying at UC to begin the direct-Ph.D. program in aerospace engineering. While at UC, Gilligan has received numerous prestigious awards, the latest being the Presidential Leadership Medal of Excellence. This award, given by the University President, is bestowed upon students who best exemplify the ideals of the university including scholarship, leadership and character.

Aerospace engineer named graduate student of the month

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aerospace engineering graduate student Harpreet Singh Chhabra had to complete his first semester at the University of Cincinnati online while he was still in India. He hit the ground running when he arrived on campus — he was elected treasurer of the Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Association, served as a teaching assistant for several aerospace courses and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science.

UC engineering student aims to introduce robots into daily life

Yufeng Sun, University of Cincinnati aerospace engineering doctoral student, returned to academia for a transformative experience. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, he worked for more than 10 years at Autodesk, a Computer Aided Design (CAD) software company. While at UC, he has mentored undergraduate students, served as a teaching assistant in several courses and provided visiting high school students with an introduction to aerospace engineering research. Through these interactions with students and witnessing their success, he developed a great passion for mentoring and was recently named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month from UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.

UC engineer explores more efficient propulsion for aircraft

University of Cincinnati aerospace engineering doctoral student Saugat Ghimire was fascinated by planes his entire life. At UC, he has been involved in teaching and research, on-campus activities such as serving as the president of the Nepalese Student Association and the vice president of the Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Government. He was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.
