While employed at the University of Cincinnati as a professor of mechanical engineering, William Kuhn, PhD, had an idea for a compact, flameless heater that could be enclosed in pre-packaged meals to safely cook them. The device transformed the meals, ready to eat landscape through a simple process involving salt water and a magnesium-iron alloy.

In the heart of UC's 1819 Innovation Hub lies the Ground Floor Makerspace, an advanced and active hub of ingenuity where students, faculty and the community converge to bring their ideas to life. This includes being the birthplace of robots much like miniature race cars, combating fender to fender in an enclosed boxing ring. Combat robots like UC's Maximizer will again be fighting for first place in the National Havoc Robot League (NHRL) competition, slated for April 20.

The University of Cincinnati's Digital Fabrication Lab fired up its 35 3D printers to help create products to help early in the pandemic. The projects were just a few of the 60,000 printed parts produced by the lab for UC engineering and medical students and faculty researchers and for external sources like the Cincinnati Museum Center.
