Chemical engineer produces biofuels from waste materials

Yu Zhang, who first came to the University of Cincinnati in 2014 to begin a master’s degree in environmental engineering., is continuing her research work in developing biofuels from waste as a doctoral student in chemical engineering in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. She shares her research goals, UC experience and the impact she hopes to make through engineering.

Witnessing destruction led engineer into career of creation

Rand Talib grew up in Iraq during the war there. She was enamored with architecture and was devastated watching beloved buildings destroyed in bombings. She decided to dedicate her education and career to learning how to build instead of destroy, which led her to a doctorate in civil engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

Civil engineering student grows through co-op

Before earning her civil engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati this spring, Nichole Criner interned abroad in Germany as part of UC's international co-op program and was awarded a prestigious leadership award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.

UC student aims to better interpret artificial intelligence

Javier Viaña Pérez started his studies in mechanical engineering earning two degrees in his native Spain and then came to the University of Cincinnati for his master’s and Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. He has racked up a long list of accomplishments, including creating a high-resolution camera for microsatellites that is currently in use on the International Space Station. His doctoral research in artificial intelligence is dedicated to making a radical shift in how we think about AI. He was named UC College of Engineering and Applied Science Graduate Student Engineer of the Month.

Engineering student shifts from the stage to the lab

Garek Bushnell came to the University of Cincinnati with a singular goal: to study acting. He graduated in April 2021 with his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering instead. Bushnell’s path between these two seemingly dissimilar fields is rooted in his mindset that following your passion will drive your determination to succeed – even if that passion comes from an unexpected source.

UC honors Armstrong protege with engineering alumni award

As a high school student in New Jersey, Ralph Spitzen joined a worldwide team of amateur astronomers to pinpoint the exact location of the moon. This work helped Neil Armstrong take humanity’s first step on the lunar surface. Spitzen later learned directly from Armstrong as an aerospace engineering student at the University of Cincinnati.
