UC grad finds inspiration in the Amazon and its community

When Aaliyah Mann traveled to the Amazon to study abroad, she didn’t know what to expect. When she returned, she had a whole new perspective on how we, as a country, can try to help ourselves. Environmental challenges are becoming increasingly common. Roadblocks like deforestation and air pollution severely impact our world, and its future health, and the world is starting to take notice. In the summer of 2024, a Northern California wildfire forced hundreds to evacuate while parts of Florida were still reeling from severe flooding, as reported by NBC News. The world needs more people focused on lessening the effects of these issues, and the University of Cincinnati’s Environmental Studies program students seek to do just that.

UC grad fights for housing equality in Cincinnati

LaTonya Springs has been around Cincinnati for a long time. A 2015 University of Cincinnati graduate, Springs has spent her time in and around Cincinnati, connecting with the people and learning about their lives and struggles, all with the hope of helping them fight for better conditions in the area. After starting her education, she was working full-time, which left her in a situation where finishing college didn’t make a lot of sense. However, once UC started a new program called Comeback Bearcat, Springs was able to come back and finish her undergraduate degree in communication, offered through the College of Arts and Sciences.

Members of A&S community to be honored at Onyx and Ruby Gala

At this year’s 11th annual Onyx & Ruby Gala, two members of the Arts and Sciences community will be celebrated: Candice Matthews Brackeen, A&S ‘04, and Jaela Kennedy, A&S ‘25. Each year the UC Alumni Association’s African American Alumni Affiliate hosts the Onyx & Ruby Gala to celebrate and honor the accomplishments of six esteemed alumni and students. The gala also serves as a fundraiser for the Shani Scholarship, providing students with the opportunity to study abroad. This year’s gala will take place Feb. 22 at Great American Ball Park.
