UC Makerspace jump-starts fall semester with 3 weeks of workshops
Hands-on certifications available to students, community members
The University of Cincinnati’s 2023-24 academic year is about to begin, and the UC Ground Floor Makerspace is jump-starting the fall semester with the facility’s most popular hands-on programs, including woodshop, laser cutting, metalshop and benchtop CNC.
“Whether students need certifications for an upcoming project, want a head start this semester or are ready to try something new, we’ve built this opportunity for them,” said Lucy Weaver, Makerspace coordinator.
Programs include:
- 3D Scanning Certification, Aug. 31, 10 a.m.-noon, or Sept. 5, 2-4 p.m.: Basic strategies for successful scanning using the Artec Eva handheld 3D scanner and Artec Studio scanning software.
- Benchtop CNC A Certification, Aug. 29, 3-5 p.m., or Sept. 11, 3-5 p.m.: Introductory course to the Carbide 3d Shapeoko XXL and Nomad 3 benchtop CNC machines.
- Custom Stickers Workshop, Sept. 1, 2-4 p.m.: Provides an overview of the graphics area. Participants will leave with a custom set of stickers and the ability to make more independently in the future.
- Desktop Sewing Certification, Aug. 31, 2-4 p.m.: A tool check-off course for the Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine.
- Industrial Sewing Certification, Sept. 7, 2-4 p.m.: A tool check-off course for the Juki Industrial sewing machines and serger.
- Introduction to Desktop 3D Printing, Aug. 28, 1-2:30 p.m., or Sept. 14, 3-4:30 p.m.: An introduction to the core concepts and methods for desktop 3D printing, intended for those with little to no experience.
- Introduction to Vector Drawing, Aug. 30, 4-5 p.m.: Teaches makers to create vector drawings to help optimize workflow and improve prototyping and fabrication skills.
- Introduction to Waterjet Machining, Sept. 7, 10 a.m.-noon: Familiarizes participants with the Omax Maxiem water jet cutter, covering basic part setup, software and post-processing files.
- Laser Cutting Certification, Aug. 25, 3-4:30 p.m.; Aug. 29, 2-3:30 p.m.; Sept. 6, 5-6:30 p.m.; Sept. 12, 3-4:30 p.m.; or Sept. 16, noon-1:30 p.m.: Teaches the proper use and safety procedures for laser cutting.
- Metalshop A Certification, Aug. 30, 10 a.m.-noon; Sept. 1, 2-4 p.m.; Sept. 6, 2-4 p.m.; or Sept. 12, 10 a.m.-noon: Covers basic metal shop operations and safety procedures for the cold saw, metal bandsaw, drill press, sanders and basic cold working.
- MIG Welding and Plasma Cutter Certification, Sept. 15, 10 a.m.-noon: A tool check-off course covering the proper use and safety procedures for MIG welding and plasma cutting.
- Powder Coating Certification, Sept. 8, 1-3 p.m.: Covers the proper use and safety procedure for powder coating.
- TIG Welding Certification, Sept. 15, 2-4 p.m.: Provides an overview of the use and safety procedures for TIG welding aluminum and steel.
- Woodshop A Certification, Aug. 25, 10 a.m.-noon; Aug. 30, 5-7 p.m.; Sept. 2, noon- 2 p.m.; or Sept. 8, 10 a.m.-noon: A tool check-off course covering the proper use and safety procedures for basic hand tools, drill press, bandsaw, sanders, router table and miter saw.
- Woodshop B Certification, Aug. 25, 2-4 p.m.; Sept. 8, 2-4 p.m.; or Sept. 13, 5-7 p.m.: Covers the proper use and safety procedures for the table saw, jointer and planer.
The UC Ground Floor Makerspace is a 12,000-square-foot prototyping and fabrication facility that empowers creative problem solvers through training, access to equipment and resources from ideation to creation.
Current UC students, faculty, staff and 1819 building partners qualify for zero-cost membership. Community members can purchase memberships for a monthly fee. Introductions and certifications are always free for members.
