Taking a bite out of diabetes and hypertension

According to a report in early 2022 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 37 million people in the United States have diabetes, which is more than 11% of the population. Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2017 based on the death certificates in which diabetes was listed as the underlying cause of death. A newly launched University of Cincinnati partnership is aiming to put a dent in those numbers in Greater Cincinnati.

CPS All-Star Showcase raises funds, awareness

Now in its second year, the CPS All-Star Showcase raised $15,000 to assist students in need at CPS schools. The basketball competition, between CPS schools all-stars and other competitions, is a partnership between CPS and UC that raises funds for Project Connect, an organization of advocacy paired with specialized educational services and lifestyle enrichment opportunities for CPS students experiencing homelessness.

After 20 years, Ohio Innocence Project steams ahead

Founded in 2003, the Ohio Innocence Project at UC Law is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is continuing its initial purpose: working to free every person in Ohio who has been convicted of a crime they didn’t commit. So far, 45 individuals have been exonerated or freed after collectively serving more than 700 years behind bars.

Raymond Towler, an Ohio Innocence Project exoneree, will perform as part of the Exoneree Band for OIP's 20th anniversary celebration event set for Thursday, May 18, at Cincinnati's Music Hall. The gala celebration will also feature keynote speaker, bestselling author John Grisham.

UC Law lends expertise to local residents in need

The vast majority of tenants facing eviction in Hamilton County go through legal proceedings without a lawyer and many turn to the Help Center for Hamilton County Municipal Court. The center helps individuals without legal representation access the court system by providing education, information and limited legal advice. It is a partnership between the UC College of Law and the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts.

Local CPS students see path to college, job skilling first-hand at UC

University of Cincinnati leadership provided an inspiring look at what is possible for a group of Cincinnati Public High School students at the 1819 Innovation Hub, the nerve center of the Cincinnati Innovation District® (CID).  As part of the “My Brother’s Keeper” (MBK) leadership series in Ohio, more than 22 Cincinnati area high school students enjoyed a fun-filled day engaging with leaders at UC’s 1819 Innovation Hub, learning about career opportunities through the CID and how to achieve a college degree in IT or cyber security through UC’s Early IT program.

UC hopes frogs inspire students to leap into STEM

December 21, 2023

A University of Cincinnati biologist is working with teachers at two Cincinnati public schools to help them explain evolution using frogs that biologist Lucinda Lawson studies in Africa. Lawson works with Hyperolius frogs, a genus of 150 to 200 colorful species, including one she and her research partners discovered in 2019 that was new to science.
