CCM presents Stephen Flaherty tribute at New York's Carnegie Hall

CCM students and Broadway stars perform during a fundraising gala on Jan. 14, 2024

Recently dubbed by Playbill Magazine as one of Broadway’s “Big 10,” the UC College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) unites Broadway stars and current students in a one-night-only performance to honor Tony Award-winning composer Stephen Flaherty at Carnegie Hall in New York on Jan. 14, 2024.

The performance celebrates CCM’s Broadway impact and raises money for scholarships and educational initiatives at the college. Featuring 100 current CCM students from musical theatre, dance and orchestral studies, as well as an all-star lineup of alumni, the event honors CCM alumnus Stephen Flaherty (BM Composition, ’82), composer of works such as Once on This IslandRagtime and Anastasia.

Read more about this special performance via Playbill and BroadwayWorld.

Originally presented at CCM for the college’s annual fundraising event in fall 2022, the performance features the music of Flaherty and his longtime writing partner, book writer/lyricist Lynn Ahrens. It was conceptualized and developed by the following CCM alumni: Producer Kevin McCollum (BFA Musical Theatre, ’84; HonDoc, '05), Producer Jim Semmelman (BFA Musical Theatre, ’76), Music Supervisor Jeffrey Saver (BM Piano, ’79), Writer David Goldsmith (BFA Musical Theatre, ’85) and Sarah Mizelle Miller (MA Arts Administration, ’11). CCM Senior Director of Development and Alumni Relations Elaine M. Cox (MA Arts Administration, ’20) serves as the managing producer.

Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who directed the original production at CCM, returns as the director/choreographer for the Carnegie Hall event. Also reprising their roles for the Carnegie Hall performance are CCM alums and Broadway veterans: Christy Altomare (BFA Musical Theatre, ’08), Ashley Brown (BFA Musical Theatre, ’04), Jason Graae (BFA Musical Theatre, ’80), Aaron Lazar (MFA Musical Theatre, ’00), Bryonha Marie (Broadway guest artist), Geoff Packard (BFA Musical Theatre, '04), Stephanie Jae Park (BFA Musical Theatre, '14) and Alton Fitzgerald White (Musical Theatre, att. 1983-86).

The core ensemble will be joined on stage by CCM Musical Theatre, Dance and Orchestral Studies students, conducted by Saver. Additional students from CCM Orchestral Conducting, Stage Management and Arts Administration will also travel to New York to work behind-the-scenes on the production. Help CCM get to New York by supporting students through sponsorship opportunities.

Musical selections will include never-before-performed selections from Flaherty’s childhood; the first song of Ahrens and Flaherty; a new song from the upcoming revival of My Favorite Year; songs from new Ahrens and Flaherty shows Little Dancer and Knoxville; the New York premiere of “The Lorax,” an epic sequence cut from Seussical; as well as favorites from Anastasia, Lucky Stiff, Once On This Island, A Man Of No Importance and Ragtime.

This prestigious concert event is conceived in the multimedia tradition of shows like the Broadway retrospective, “Sondheim on Sondheim.” Stephen Flaherty, in projected images and filmed interviews, will introduce each of the musical moments with anecdotes and personal perspectives on the collaborative, creative and commercial processes involved in each of the selections. The interviews, with videography by Tyler Milliron Studios, were conducted by David Goldsmith in and around Broadway and in Flaherty’s New York City home.

The evening will end with Flaherty himself speaking about how his experiences at CCM and in Cincinnati shaped his artistic world-view, and how his own education was only made possible through generous scholarship support.
