Students get hands-on learning experience in Media Production's lighting class

CCM shares an inside look at the "Lighting for Film and Television Production" class in our latest mini-documentary. Hosted by CCM Media Production, the class is offered in the summer to UC students interested in learning more about filmmaking.

The class focuses on how to light for camera work, including four characteristics of light: intensity (how much light), quality (hard or soft light), color and direction. It also teaches students how to light for various shoots, like video interviews or narrative film scenes. "Lighting really is everything," says BFA Media Production student Noah Anderson. "It can adjust the tone and feel of whatever you shoot drastically."

It isn't only open to Media Production students — any UC students interested in filmmaking can register to take the class, which is offered during the summer.

“Now that I understand how lighting works, I’m able to factor that into storyboarding and cinematography and things like that," says BFA Acting student Lyd Noll. "Lighting is so important to telling story, and creating meaning within the shot. I’m glad I have that knowledge of something that’s so technical from what I do, to make it artistic and accessible.”
