UC student aims to better interpret artificial intelligence

Javier Viaña Pérez started his studies in mechanical engineering earning two degrees in his native Spain and then came to the University of Cincinnati for his master’s and Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. He has racked up a long list of accomplishments, including creating a high-resolution camera for microsatellites that is currently in use on the International Space Station. His doctoral research in artificial intelligence is dedicated to making a radical shift in how we think about AI. He was named UC College of Engineering and Applied Science Graduate Student Engineer of the Month.

UC opioid study identifies at-risk populations in America

A new study by the University of Cincinnati finds that fatal opiate overdoses are most prevalent in six states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana and Tennessee. Researchers identified 25 hot spots of fatal opioid overdoses nationwide using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The study demonstrates how both widespread and localized the problem of substance use disorders can be.

Obesity and binge eating: a disrupted clock in our body?

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and the Lindner Center of HOPE are hosting a unique clinical trial to see if readjusting the circadian system of people with binge eating behavior can help in understanding more about why this occurs and develop new treatment options in the future. Scientists are using tabletop lamps and melatonin supplements to test their theory.

Breaching the blood-brain barrier to treat tumors

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University, have found that using ultrasound combined with RNA-loaded nanoparticles could help infiltrate the blood-brain barrier and deliver targeted, more effective treatment to brain tumors, while eliminating uncomfortable side effects.
