Local music spotlight: On a Limb releases new album

UC College-Conservatory of Music alumni pianist Andrew Haug (BM Jazz Studies, ‘18), bassist Noah Simionides (BM Jazz Studies, ‘17) and drummer Charlie Schefft (BM Music Education, ‘19) teamed up four years ago to create On a Limb, a jazz-influenced instrumental trio. The ensemble has experienced significant successes, including tour dates around the United States and now the release of its second album, Replaying the Tapes.

CCM Lighting Design student shines bright

UC College-Conservatory of Music Master of Fine Arts in Lighting Design & Technology student Rachael Blackwell is the first CCM student to receive an internship through Hemsley Lighting Programs, Inc.’s Annual Hemsley Internship Program. After her graduation this spring, Blackwell will work with one or more top-tier professional arts organizations, including the likes of New York City Ballet, San Francisco Opera and Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. Blackwell expects to collaborate with lighting designer Paul Miller at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, if all goes as planned.

Classical guitar students give performance on WGUC

April 24, 2020

Cincinnati Public Radio WGUC 90.9 invited UC College-Conservatory of Music classical guitar students Wesley Weidig and Luke Jackson to give a live performance in the radio station’s Corbett Studio in December. The performance is now available on WGUC’s Clef Notes blog.

Violin alum Christopher Robinson receives 2021 Knights Arts Champion Award

UC College-Conservatory of Music Alumnus Christopher Robinson (BM Violin, ‘15) was recently announced as a 2021 Knights Arts Champion by the Knight Foundation in Miami, Florida. The Foundation selects community leaders who have contributed to the region’s arts and culture scene and awards them $10,000 to direct to a South Florida artist or arts organization of their choice. Robinson is the Founder/Co-Artistic Director of VIA Academy, a free summer music program for young aspiring musicians from remote and underrepresented communities in classical music. He is also a recent alumnus of the New World Symphony in Miami and currently performs in the second violin section of the Louisville Orchestra.

CCM alumni compete in Lotte Lenya Competition Finals

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music is delighted to announce that two of its alumni reached the finals of the Lotte Lenya Competition, one of the most prestigious vocal competitions for young artists. Victoria Okafor (MM Voice, ’21) and Max Chernin (BFA Musical Theatre, ‘12) were chosen to compete in a final round of 15 vocalists out of a record applicant pool of over 500.

CCM welcomes Charles H. Turner Post-Doctoral Fellow in Music Composition

UC College-Conservatory of Music Interim Dean Jonathan Kregor welcomes Felipe Tovar-Henao as the Charles Henry Turner Post-Doctoral Fellow at CCM, where he will continue his research and teach while preparing for a future faculty position. Tovar-Henao will be mentored by CCM Professor of Composition Michael Fiday during the 2-year appointment, which begins on Aug. 14, 2023.
