After spending five years as a Bearcat earning an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering technology, Will Mnich decided to continue at the University of Cincinnati to earn not one, but two additional degrees in the aerospace engineering field. Mnich is a student in the Aero-Systems Operations (AESOP) dual degree program.
At the University of Cincinnati, undergraduate engineering degrees take five years to complete, unlike the typical four-year bachelor's degree program. But that extra year is incredibly valuable for students to gain a head start on building their careers. Students receive unique, hands-on experiences during their time at the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) through the cooperative education (co-op) program. Co-op is built into the curriculum and students alternate between semesters in the classroom and semesters working full-time in industry or research.

Even as a toddler, Emma Vail enjoyed figuring out how things work. The University of Cincinnati engineering student finished two co-op rotations for Honda Motor Co. and works on Formula One cars as part of Bearcats Motorsports.

Vamshi Kiran Gogi always wanted to be an engineer. During the first semester of his master's program at the University of Cincinnati, he developed a passion for semiconductor research, leading him to transition into a PhD program. Throughout his years as a Bearcat, Gogi has served as the president of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Graduate Student Association, trained students in cleanroom processes, acted as a graduate assistant in the Office of College Computing and more. He was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Hyojung Kim, University of Cincinnati chemical engineering student, spent a semester on co-op in Idaho Falls working at the Idaho National Laboratory. Ever since he was a child, Joseph Cortas was enthralled by the energy of construction sites. While his initial fascination centered on large trucks, his childhood interest sent him down a path of professional and personal discovery. Today, Cortas is a fourth-year student concurrently pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering through the ACCEND accelerated degree program at the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).

After earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in Nepal, Sameer Pokhrel came to the United States to further his education. From an early age, he had a lifelong fascination with aviation. As an adult, he transformed this fascination into a career, pursuing a doctoral degree in aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati's historic program. Here, he has succeeded in research, instruction, and was recently named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Ground transportation has a substantial impact on the daily lives of humans. Sai Bonthu, a doctoral candidate of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Cincinnati, is working to develop a product that has the potential to accurately reduce traffic accidents. Currently, he is working on a grant with the Ohio Department of Transportation and was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Ever since she garnered an appreciation for chemistry in high school, fifth-year University of Cincinnati student Jaclyn Bashore has not looked back. When she graduates with a chemical engineering degree and a minor in chemistry this spring, Bashore will have had six co-op experiences — along with a new full-time job at AbbVie, a biopharmaceutical research company with whom she did two co-op rotations. To commemorate her exceptional co-op work, the UC College of Engineering and Applied Science awarded Bashore the 2024 Herman Schneider Medal, an annual award given to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding success as a co-op student.
