UC offers local Spanish Immersion program this summer

By: Joí Dean Many UC students have missed the opportunity to travel abroad in the past due to the pandemic, but two professors from the College of Arts and Sciences have found a solution. Assistant professors Juan Godoy and Kara Moranski, along with colleagues from the Department of Romance and Arabic Languages and Literatures, have created UC’s first Summer Spanish Local Immersion Program. The idea was originally proposed by professor Carlos Gutiérrez, who had a vision for students to have an opportunity to experience Hispanic culture locally. After numerous brainstorming sessions, Godoy and Moranski will see the program come to life this summer. “Students should expect to fully engage in daily activities and cultural activities that are not normally part of a regular class,” Godoy said.

CCM E-Media and Acting students win NATAS Student Production Award

The Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) awarded a team of CCM Electronic Media and Acting students the 2018 Regional Student Production Award for Best Long Form – Fiction for a film they created in class. Integration Episode 1: The Update is a science-fiction drama that was created in the Spring 2018 Capstone Film course (EMED 4003), taught by Electronic Media Division Head Kevin Burke.

CSO Fanfare Project debuts new work performed by CSO/CCM Diversity Fellow

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's Fanfare Project launched in May 2020 to commission and premiere new solo works in response to the coronavirus pandemic. It's shared new music from more than 12 composers so far, including a recently premiered Viola Fanfare by Grammy-winner and MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient Rhiannon Giddens. Stephen Slaughter is an assistant professor in the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. This year, like so many instructors, Slaughter had to shift gears in his classes in DAAP’s School of Architecture and Interior Design to accommodate online learning. Slaughter shares how he adapted his studio classes for a virtual environment.

Making a scene: Senior Theatre Design student reflects on her time at CCM

Cincinnati audiences might not know Marissa Picciuto's name, but they've certainly seen her work on stage at UC's College-Conservatory of Music. She has worked behind the scenes of many productions, including CCM Acting's Clybourne Park last month. This spring, Picciuto graduates with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Design, Props and Scenic Art with a specialization in props.
