A musical journey to Carnegie Hall
CCM alumni, faculty, staff, students prepare for a one-night-only performance at NYC's Carnegie Hall
The CCM community is buzzing with excitement as preparations kick into high gear for one of the college's the most anticipated performances of the year. A celebration of artistry, collaboration and the enduring legacy of CCM, "The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Honors Alumnus Stephen Flaherty" performance at New York's Carnegie Hall features an all-star lineup of alumni alongside 100 current CCM students from musical theatre, dance, stage management, arts administration and a student orchestra.
This event is not just a performance — it's a testament to how dedication and passion shapes the lives of countless students, devoted faculty members and accomplished alumni. First conceived in 2020 as a heartfelt project by CCM alumnus Jim Semmelman (BFA Musical Theatre, ’76) aimed at giving back to the CCM community, the fundraising performance is now set to take center stage in the heart of New York City at the iconic Carnegie Hall on January 14, 2024.
What makes this performance at Carnegie Hall truly extraordinary is the coming together of multiple generations of talent. It is a testament to the multi-generational legacy that is CCM.

Sarah Mizelle Miller, alumna and former senior director of development at CCM, recalls working with Semmelman for two years to bring this project to life on stage at CCM in the fall of 2022. “This project is such an incredible example of the CCM alumni showing up for our students," she says. "We raised over $100,000 to support our students through the concert in Cincinnati, and it was the generosity of over 40 alumni that allowed for that to happen.” The fall 2022 performance at CCM was a preview of what will be performed on one of the country’s most famous stages this January.
The performance features the music of Flaherty and his longtime writing partner, book writer and lyricist Lynn Ahrens. It was conceptualized and developed by the following CCM alumni: Producer Kevin McCollum (BFA Musical Theatre, ’84; HonDoc, '05), Producer Jim Semmelman (BFA Musical Theatre, ’76), Music Supervisor Jeffrey Saver (BM Piano, ’79), Writer David Goldsmith (BFA Musical Theatre, ’85) and Sarah Mizelle Miller (MA Arts Administration, ’11). CCM Senior Director of Development and Alumni Relations Elaine M. Cox (MA Arts Administration, ’20) serves as the managing producer.
Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who directed the original production at CCM, returns as the director/choreographer for the Carnegie Hall event. Also reprising their roles for the Carnegie Hall performance are CCM alums and Broadway veterans: Christy Altomare (BFA Musical Theatre, ’08), Ashley Brown (BFA Musical Theatre, ’04), Jason Graae (BFA Musical Theatre, ’80), Aaron Lazar (MFA Musical Theatre, ’00), Bryonha Marie (Broadway guest artist), Geoff Packard (BFA Musical Theatre, '04), Stephanie Jae Park (BFA Musical Theatre, '14) and Alton Fitzgerald White (Musical Theatre, att. 1983-86).
The collaborative effort between students and alumni represents a significant moment in the history of the school and the world of musical theatre.
“When the ‘curtain goes up’ on January 14 at Carnegie Hall, audience members are not only in for a spectacular show, but also a unique glimpse into the rich history and enduring impact of CCM,” says Vincent DeGeorge, Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre at CCM. “What makes this performance at Carnegie Hall truly extraordinary is the coming together of multiple generations of talent. It is a testament to the multigenerational legacy that is CCM. Students, stage managers, performers, musicians and professional producers, writers and performers who all had their start at CCM unite to celebrate one of our most prolific and celebrated alums — Stephen Flaherty,” he adds.
As the Carnegie Hall performance approaches, the atmosphere among CCM students is charged with enthusiasm. They eagerly anticipate the opportunity to collaborate with industry professionals and partake in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate a musical theatre legend.
According to Julia Schick, a senior musical theatre student at CCM, the energy has been building all semester.
"There's been a palpable buzz about it," she says. "Many of the students involved were part of last year's show, and they're thrilled to return to this material and explore it in a fresh setting."
Reflecting on her own experience, Schick affirms that participating in such a significant undertaking has profoundly impacted her educational experience. “Working alongside CCM alumni, who bring limitless industry knowledge, and the experience of a professional rehearsal room with its high expectations provides a unique type of training. It prepares us for the real world of professional theatre, helping us understand what lies ahead after college.”
At the heart of this event, CCM's impact on Broadway and on the art form of musical theatre becomes evident. As DeGeorge points out, “This performance serves as a reminder of the depth and scope of the work by alumni like Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and the importance of continued support for CCM to keep nurturing future talent.”
Don't miss this historic event, as we come together to honor our past, celebrate our present and pave the way for the next generations of artists.
