One is Sewing, the Other Rowing: Sisters Pin Their Olympic Hopes on Teamwork

Cincinnati sisters Kelly and Raegen Salchow are both on pins and needles as the August Olympics in Athens approach. Kelly, rowing on the U.S. women s quadruple sculls team, is a soon-to-retire veteran seeking a medal after barely missing out with a fifth-place finish in the 2000 games. That hoped-for medal would suit Raegen just fine. It's Raegen who put her fashion-design degree to work for her sister, creating a state-of-the-smart unisuit that s more than sew-sew in providing a competitive advantage.

That s why young design students from the University of Cincinnati have drawn up plans for and are now reconstructing portions of a storefront location in Over the Rhine to replace the location where the sisters formerly worked.

Saving Santorini: Students on a Summer Rescue Mission in Greece

Santorini is a Mediterranean island that s just too pretty for its own good. The eight-mile gem of radiant sea, sky and cliffs and its 12,000 year-round inhabitants receive three million visitors a year. It s way too many people wanting way too much. And that s why the island invited an Extreme (Tourism) Make-Over Team from the University of Cincinnati to come and help tame tourism there.

A Slice of Real Life: Students Help Make a Pizza Parlor to Serve Over-the-Rhine

University of Cincinnati design students are topping off a year in the classroom with real-world, hands-on work to benefit the local community. This summer, they ve reconstructed portions of a storefront location in Over-the-Rhine to help local nuns who need a new place to run a non-profit pizzeria that specializes in job training for hard-to-employ residents of the community.
