UC will be celebrating alumni excellence at the 10th Onyx & Ruby Gala on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024, hosted by the African American Alumni Affiliate. This black-tie affair, a highlight of the UC Alumni Association's annual events, recognizes the achievements of Black alumni, faculty, staff, and students, awarding them with prestigious honors.

The College of Arts and Sciences announced Ryan J. White and Rina Williams as the newest divisional deans of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. White and Kennedy’s inclusion will bring new focuses and structure around student success and the college of Arts and Sciences’ advancement. Both will officially begin their new terms on Jan. 1, 2024.

The time is 2024 and society as we know it is breaking down. This was the prediction of Octavia E. Butler (1947–2006). is her 1993 fiction novel: "The Parable of the Sower." UC speculative fiction expert Cassandra Jones joined a panel of speculative fiction experts to talk about Butler's book and the similarities to today.

Three faculty members in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences have received awards for bringing new thinking to classroom learning by the college’s Instructional Innovation Advisory Committee (iiAC). The Dean’s Award for Innovative Instruction is conferred on faculty who break new ground in teaching approaches, and the A&S Course Release Award grants the recipient a break from the usual teaching schedule to fully develop new or enhance existing courses. Both are awarded annually, and come with financial stipends.

When Littisha Bates came to UC in 2009, right out of graduate school at Arizona State University, the PhD sociology researcher was part of a cohort of three new faculty members, all underrepresented scholars. “We were the three musketeers,” she says.

Trusted confidant. Toughest critic. Mentor. Advocate. These are some of the ways colleagues paid tribute to Marilyn Kershaw, director of the Office of Diversity and Access at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts and Sciences, at an online retirement reception last month. Kershaw’s retirement ends an 11-year tenure with the college, where she helped move forward a more diverse and inclusive culture in faculty and staff hiring and graduate student recruitment, working with characteristic grace to change biases and open doors. Kershaw’s influence also helped pave the way for the creation of a dean’s-level diversity and inclusion role at A&S.
