Fourth-year medical students at the University of Cincinnati celebrated Match Day 2021 with social media posts, facetime visits, texts and calls to family and friends. UC had 174 matched students who now know where they will spend the next three to seven years completing a medical residency. They will be the future doctors of Cincinnati and beyond.

Alvin Crawford launched a program at the University of Cincinnati this year designed to mentor Black males in medical school. Black Men in Medicine Cincinnati (BMIMC), in its infancy, attempts to pair incoming medical students with older medical students and those who are closer to completing their medical degree with residents and attending physicians. The thinking is that camaraderie, networking and a defined support system might ease isolation and lead to a boost in numbers of Black male physicians.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has made “substantial improvement” as part of a “fairly remarkable recovery” after he collapsed during Monday night’s game in Cincinnati and went into cardiac arrest on the field, his doctors said Thursday. Doctors made those comments at a news conference that received widespread coverage, including in the Washington Post.

Immediately following the announcement of COVID-19 prevention measures in March, the Greater Cincinnati Tristate region saw a nearly 40% decline in patients coming to the hospital in time for emergency stroke care, according to researchers from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The researchers are calling for urgent public education to mitigate a potential crisis of stroke patients avoiding needed emergency care due to concerns about COVID-19

In one of the first studies of its kind, a University of Cincinnati researcher is using a grant from the Ohio attorney general’s office to research the pharmacogenomics of opioid addiction. The grant was awarded to Caroline Freiermuth, MD, associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UC College of Medicine, the principal investigator for the study. The initial year will be supported with $1.63 million from the attorney general’s office, secured through money collected from pharmaceutical companies involved in opioid lawsuits. Pharmacogenomics, a relatively new field, is the study of how genes affect a person's response to drugs.

New research out of the University of Cincinnati examines the association between genetics and the presence of opioid use disorder (OUD). The study identified six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or genetic variants that are linked to OUD.

The highest ever number of opioid-related overdose deaths in the United States was recorded in 2020 at 68,630, a 68% increase in just two years. Naloxone is a medicine that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose, but a new study out of the University of Cincinnati finds that widespread community distribution of naloxone through a take-home naloxone program did not significantly impact the median monthly opioid overdose rates.
