The School, Stage & Screen podcast created by UC College-Conservatory of Music alumni takes listeners inside the entertainment industry with stories and advice from Broadway performers, television actors, movie producers, make-up artists and more. WVXU's Cincinnati Edition recently featured the podcast in an interview with co-hosts Brian J. Leitten (BFA E-Media, ’02) and Dylan Mulvaney (BFA Musical Theatre, ’19).

By Nailah Edwards From the age of 15, Meghan Goth knew she wanted to pursue a career in journalism. She was inspired by the creative writing and journalism classes she took during middle school and high school in Denver, Colorado with teacher Elektra Greer. “(She) did a fantastic job of fostering my love of writing,” Goth said. Goth is now the senior manager of the enterprise/investigative team of WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, where she manages the I-Team and enterprise reporters. Goth and her family moved to Cincinnati when she was 16. She returned to Colorado to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder, but she decided to finish her degree at the University of Cincinnati, where she studied journalism and minored in French in the College of Arts & Sciences.

During Emily Maxwell’s fourth year studying English at the University of Cincinnati, she had an epiphany. After taking a course in journalism, she changed her major and didn’t look back, becoming the first student to graduate from UC with a concentration in photojournalism. Now an award-winning visual journalist with multiple Emmys to her credit, Maxwell is known for her documentary work on poverty, public housing, environmental issues and wildlife conservation. Maxwell credits the journalism program in the College of Arts and Sciences for teaching students how to do a little bit of everything in a journalism career. Students enrolled in the program were strongly encouraged to land internships at local news outlets and to contribute to UC’s student-run publication, The News Record, a training ground for UC journalists for more than 100 years.

Five former University of Cincinnati athletes and one current second-year student prepare to compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in July and August, representing four nations in five athletic competitions. Former Bearcats include Annette Echikunwoke, hammer throw (Nigeria); Vanessa Gilles, women's soccer (Canada); Nate Fish, baseball (Israel); Jordan Thompson, volleyball (U.S.) and Lewis Johnson (NBC Sports TV broadcaster). Lawrence Sapp, second-year UC student will compete in the Paralympic swim competition in late August.

As a University of Cincinnati College of Medicine student, Sarah Appeadu, MD, ’21, remembers journaling on the “3 Cs” that got her through medical school: Community, community, community. Now, when she lists the people who supported her through four years of training—the last year in a global pandemic—it keeps growing: her family, her church, her classmates, and the college’s Office of Student Affairs and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “I look back and it was such a crucial time to really be nurtured in that way,” she says. “I’m so thankful that I had those people. It shows being around the right people really mattered. That’s my same hope for residency even.”

The University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) is partnering with Procter & Gamble’s (P&G) Beauty division to increase diversity and inclusion in the design industry. P&G Beauty has created three funds to support opportunities for underrepresented minority students to study design at DAAP’s Myron E. Ullman, Jr. School of Design.
