The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is opening what it calls a “heart bank” to collect tissue samples that can be used by researchers. Those samples will be stored in a biorepository to provide a potentially valuable resource to help researchers find answers to scientific questions.

UC researchers are taking part in a new nearly $2 million, multiyear study that will help develop a new generation of PPE, or personal protective equipment, for health care workers. UC researchers will work with teams from Iowa State University and the University of California-Davis to improve the design, function and safety of PPE, or personal protective equipment, the university said in a release this week. The study is part of a multi-institutional, four-year grant worth $1.8 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Cincinnati Business Courier published a story on the research.

Spray on skin, called RECELL, is now approved for both adults and children, sparing them the unnecessary pain of dozens of skin grafts. UC Health says it’s the first in the region to use the technology made by Avita. WVXU published a story on the spray, quoting Julia Slater, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the UC College of Medicine.

The University of Cincinnati and the U.S. Air Force have renewed their cooperative agreement that could mean up to $49 million in research funds. This is the second renewal of the cooperative agreement dating back to 2010.

Research from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine shows that use of a topical drug, called AB569, a combination of acidified nitrite and EDTA (or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) promotes killing of antibiotic-resistant bacteria while enhancing the healing of wounds in a variety of burn injuries. The study was published in the journal Infection and Immunity.

Women who receive a kidney transplant have low rates of contraceptive use according to new research from the University of Cincinnati. The study, published in the Journal of Nephrology, finds an overall contraceptive use rate of 9.5% among women with kidney transplants in the United States.
