Cases of monkeypox are on the rise around world, reaching more than 67,000, including more than 25,000 in the United States. NPR reported that researchers say these types of viruses, known as zoonotic diseases, or ones that spread between humans and animals, will become increasingly commonplace as factors such as the destruction of animal habitats and human expansion into previously uninhabited areas intensify. The World Health Organization announced recently that breakthrough infections have been reported in people who had been vaccinated against monkeypox. Healthline reported there is limited data available on the efficacy of the JYNNEOS shot, so it will take time to understand how effective it is at preventing infection. Data from the 1980s has shown that the vaccine was at least 85% effective, however, some health experts expect that number to change in the current outbreak. One of the experts cited in the Healthline story was Carl Fichtenbaum, MD, of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UC College of Medicine.

The Ohio Department of Health recently announced COVID-19 boosters with the new formulation to target Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 are now available statewide. The Pfizer booster is available to Ohioans 12-years-old and older and the Moderna vaccine is available to those 18 years and up. Doctors are urging Ohioans to get those vaccines now.
