UC Law lecture examines religion in public schools
Noah Feldman, the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, will be the guest speaker for the Professor Ronna Greff Schneider Lecture on Constitutional Issues in Education Law. His lecture, “Religion in Public Schools: Constitutional Revolution in Action,” will be held at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Mar. 19, 2024, in Room 160 at the College of Law (2925 Campus Green Drive). CLE: 1 hour of general CLE has been approved for Kentucky; approval is pending for Ohio. Parking is available at the Campus Green Garage.
This event is free and open to the public. A reception will be held after the lecture. Registration is not required but is appreciated.
This lecture is made possible through the generous support of Dr. John Schneider and his family in honor of Professor Schneider’s 42-year career teaching at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
About the Lecture
In recent years the Supreme Court has substantially revised, even revolutionized, the law of free exercise and establishment. This lecture will consider the changes, their interaction, and the real world consequences. It will consider how the law will evolve going forward in the light of the history of religious liberty in the United States.
About the Lecturer
Noah Feldman is the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law, Chairman of the Society of Fellows, and founding director of the Julis-Rabinowitz Program on Jewish and Israeli Law, all at Harvard University. He specializes in constitutional studies, with particular emphasis on power and ethics, design of innovative governance solutions, law and religion, and the history of legal ideas.
A policy & public affairs columnist for Bloomberg Opinion, Feldman also writes for The New York Review of Books and was a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine for nearly a decade. He hosts the Deep Background podcast, an interview show that explores the historical, scientific, legal and cultural context behind the biggest stories in the news.
Through his consultancy, Ethical Compass, Feldman advises clients like Facebook & eBay on how to improve ethical decision-making by creating and implementing new governance solutions. In this capacity, he conceived and architected the Facebook Oversight Board, and continues to advise the company on ethics and governance issues.
Feldman is the author of 10 books on a wide variety of academic subjects. He is also the co-author of two important casebooks on Constitutional Law and on the First Amendment.
In 2003, Feldman served as senior constitutional advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, and subsequently advised members of the Iraqi Governing Council on the drafting of Iraq’s interim constitution.
He earned his A.B. from Harvard, D. Phil. from Oxford, and a J.D. from Yale Law School, where he served as a book reviews editor of the Yale Law Journal. After law school Feldman clerked for Chief Judge Harry T. Edwards of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and then Justice David Souter of the United States Supreme Court.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
